3D Printing

Print
Each week, the Library will offer open lab hours for 3D printing in the Computer Lab on the 2nd floor of the Main library. During these lab hours, patrons may bring in files to be printed. Volunteers a3D Monstersnd staff will be on hand to make sure print jobs meet required parameters, and to help patrons adjust files for printing.

The following criteria applies to the use of our 3D printers. Print jobs are not currently accepted by email.

Only approved files may be submitted to the print queue. The basic parameters are as follows:
  • All files must be submitted on a flash drive.
  • The 3D printing software only accepts .stl files. Other file types, such as .obj, or .thing files, are usually able to be converted.
  • File size may not be larger than 25MB.
  • Print time may not be longer than 3 hours.
  • The maximum build size for a print job is 4.5"x 4.5"x 4.5".
  • Patrons may only submit one print job per week. This is subject to change, depending on demand.
  • Multiple parts for the same print job can be printed together as one print job, if the pieces fit together on a single build platform.
  • Both size of the print job and the order of submission will affect when the print job will be done. Some smaller objects may be printed during the lab. The rest of the objects will be queued up to be printed by staff over the course of the following week.
  • In cases of high demand, the print queue may be limited to a certain number of print jobs for a given week.
  • Settings – Volunteers and staff will work with patrons to set the resolution, plastic type, fill, and color during intake. Availability of colors may vary.
  • Cost – 3D printing is currently free, thanks to a generous donation from the Friends of the Hillsboro Public Library and knowledgeable volunteers donating their time. This may be subject to change, depending on demand.
  • Wait/pickup time – Objects submitted during 3D lab will be ready for pickup by the following week. Objects will be held for 4 weeks (28 days) behind the circulation desk for pickup. Items not picked up in 28 days become the property of the library, and may or may not be retained.
  • Patrons will be responsible for removing the raft and supports from their own print jobs.
Only designated Library staff and volunteers will have hands-on access to the 3D printer. Please note that procedures governing the use of the Library’s 3D printers are subject to change.
