Volunteer with us!

Volunteers are an important part of the Hillsboro Public Library team. Every year, hundreds of volunteers contribute their time and talents to the Library, gaining new skills and getting a behind-the-scenes view of the Library, while helping the Library provide services to the whole community.

Volunteers are involved in the Library’s work in many ways and tackle a variety of projects, including:Photo of Raquel Escalera

  • Shelving books and other Library materials
  • Processing new Library items
  • Pricing and sorting used materials for book sales
  • Helping with special events and programs
  • Providing individual computer and technology help to patrons
  • Offering homework help for students

We are looking for volunteers who are at least 14 years old, and who can commit to a regularly-scheduled shift of two hours per week for at least three months.

Interested? Fill out an application and return it to the Library. Or take a look below for some answers to frequently asked questions.

Q: How old do I have to be to volunteer?
A:
To volunteer without a parent present, volunteers must be at least 14. Occasionally we can work with younger volunteers, if they have a parent or guardian who will volunteer alongside them.
Q: Do I have to have a set schedule?
A:
Most of our volunteer positions require a regularly-scheduled commitment (e.g. every Tuesday, 5-7pm or every Friday, 8-10am).
Q: Is there a minimum time commitment for volunteering?
A:
Because of the training involved, we ask volunteers in most positions to make a minimum commitment of 2 hours per week, for at least 3 months.
Q: Where can I volunteer?
A:
Volunteers work with us at the Main Library, on Brookwood Parkway, and at the Shute Park Branch, in downtown Hillsboro. Please indicate on your application where you’d prefer to volunteer!
Q: What if I only want to volunteer for a few weeks?
A:

We have some short-term volunteer opportunities during our semi-annual book sales, in October and April. Outside of those times, other organizations might be better able to work with your schedule:

Q: Are there any opportunities for my work/school/church group to volunteer at the Library?
A:
Maybe, and we’d love to talk with you about the options. Call or email for more information.
Q: How do I get started?
A:
First, fill out a volunteer application. Then we’ll be in touch with information on current volunteer needs and opportunities, and to schedule a volunteer interview. If you are selected as a volunteer we’ll set up a time for orientation and training.
