Safety Academy thumbnailThe Safety Academy is a FREE and unique police awareness and personal safety program for adults with developmental disabilities who require limited support in their daily activities while at home, work or in the community.

This four week program is an avenue for officers and citizens to interact in a positive, low-key environment, providing an opportunity to see beyond the badge. Our goal is to foster communication and enhance the personal safety of each participant.

Class size is limited to 10 participants. Pre-registration is required and applications must be received two weeks prior to the first class. Individuals who need assistance with activities of daily living or managing behavior must be accompanied by a support person for the entire duration of the course.

Safety Academy Schedule:

The Safety Academy is held on Mondays from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m., beginning April 8, 2019. Must attend all four classes. Classes are held at the Beaverton Police Department, 4755 SW Griffith Dr., Room 330, Beaverton, 97005

Week 1: April 8

  • Identifying the police
  • Crime prevention at home

Week 2: April 15

  • Tri-Met ridership & safety
  • Personal safety

Week 3: April 22

  • Emergency preparedness
  • Internet safety & scams

Week 4: April 29

  • Getting help: when to call 9-1-1
  • Fire prevention & safety
  • Graduation
