- Introduction: Join us on the first Tuesday of every month for a celebration of art and artists!
As part of Hillsboro’s First Tuesday Art Walk on September 4, 5 – 8 pm, the Walters Cultural Arts Center (527 E. Main St., Hillsboro) features a display and 7 pm talk by historic clothing artist Kay Demlow and local author of the “Gates of Aurona” book series, Tonya Macalino.
Author Tonya Macalino and historic clothing artist Kay Demlow, both of the Hillsboro Historical Society, will guide guests through the history of Hillsboro with photographs, fiction, and fashion. Macalino will share excerpts from her series of youth novels, “The Gates of Aurona,” in which the young protagonists find themselves embroiled in magical and mysterious adventures that reveal the colorful people and history of Hillsboro. Macalino will also give a sneak preview of the upcoming fifth book in the series, “The Gates of Aurona: The Curse of the Children.” Between readings, Demlow will share images and examples of historic Hillsboro and the dress of the era.
The group exhibition, Contemplative Landscapes, will also be on view, featuring the work of Evelyn Fritz, Victoria Shepard, Katherine McDowell, and Peter Peterson. Working with the abstracted landscape, these artists coax unexpected perspectives out of a range of media, capturing the mood, imagination, and possibilities of the natural world rendered abstractly. At 6 pm, Fritz, Shepard, and Peterson will discuss their work in an open Q&A, and Shepard will present a painting materials demo from 6:30 – 7 pm. Contemplative Landscapes will be on view through September 21.
Other activities for the evening include: music by Melody Maker Music Studio instructor and guitarist Calvin Berkenbile; a pop-up shop featuring ceramics, reproductions, and originals by exhibiting and guest artists; and paper-craft activities for the whole family led by Walters’ staff. Complimentary refreshments will be provided, including light sweets from our sponsor, Decadent Creations.
