Working for You: Hillsboro's Hillary Ostlund, Library Manager
Fun facts about Hillary and her work at the Hillsboro Public Library.
Years working for Hillsboro: 12 years.
When kids ask what you do...
I tell them I work at the best and most magical place, but not Disneyland! And then I invite them to come visit, and I ask them what they like to do and read so I can make suggestions.
What is the most inspiring part of your job?
Other people! Librarians are the ultimate people-people. We love stories, connection, and telling you a random thing that can help you on your quest. We love seeing others succeed: our library patrons and community members, and our employees.
What do you do for fun?
I spend as much time as possible with my wonderful husband, Kjell, and our families and friends. I’m a bit of a sports nut. I play and love tennis (also getting into pickleball, which has quite a Hillsboro following). I'm a massive Trail Blazers, Timbers, and Thorns fan.
What advice would you share with Hillsboro residents?
GET YOUR LIBRARY CARD. Seriously, we have Kanopy now, which is free streaming movies. And lynda.com, where you can take classes. And…OK, I’ll stop. But please get your card!
Also, your libraries are here for you — and we are for everyone. Libraries let you be you, but you must also be respectful of others and our spaces. Always talk with us if you have questions!
Tell us more about yourself:
I grew up in central Washington and moved to Bellingham, Washington, to attend college. I headed east after school and lived in Northampton and Amherst, Massachusetts, while attending more school. My husband and I moved back to the Pacific Northwest in 2006 and love it here!
