Hillsboro Police Officers Now Equipped With the Life Saving Spray, Narcan
Narcan, also known as naloxone is used for the emergency treatment of an opioid overdose. Over the last few years, first responders nationwide have responded to a steady increase of drug overdoses, especially from exposure to the synthetic opioid Fentanyl, which now accounts for over 50% of all fatal opioid overdose deaths in the United States - according to the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA).
Fentanyl is up to 100 times more potent than morphine. Other drugs are often laced with Fentanyl, making it extremely dangerous. Examples of other opioids include heroin, methadone, OxyContin, Vicodin, Percocet, and codeine. Narcan will not reverse an overdose from drugs like cocaine, methamphetamine, Xanax, Valium or alcohol.
If you come across someone you suspect is suffering from a drug overdose, immediately call 911 and do not touch any substance you believe may have caused the overdose.
