October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month
Together we can facilitate awareness, education and resources for our community.
This October, local agencies and community partners are coming together to observe Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM). In collaboration, we will be co-hosting events, all month-long, in order to facilitate awareness, education and resources to our community.
Domestic violence (DV) is estimated to affect over 12 million people nationwide annually and includes physical, emotional, social, sexual, spiritual, financial and digital abuse; and can occur between family members, intimate partners and within dating relationships.
The Hillsboro Police Department is one of only a few policing agencies in Oregon to offer 24/7 response to victims of domestic abuse. Our Domestic Violence Response Team (DVRT) responds, on scene with officers, to assist individuals in Hillsboro currently experiencing domestic abuse.
The goal of DVRT is to provide rapid crisis response and to offer a choice, where a victim may otherwise feel trapped within the cycle of abuse. Our DV advocates receive 40 hours of specialized training in trauma response, safety planning, the criminal justice system and local community resources. We’re currently in the process of training 10 new volunteers to add to our team.
With the creation of the Family Justice Center (FJC) in March of 2018, we have been able to support victims of DV throughout Washington County. The FJC has become an invaluable resource for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault to get the assistance they need, all under one roof.
Contact our DVRT staff at 503-681-6251 if you are looking for a rewarding volunteer opportunity and please join us for upcoming DVAM events.
