Make Your Wish During Hillsboro Arts Month

Post Date:09/26/2019

Wishes hanging from the wishing treeWhat’s your wish? Will you hang it Downtown?

Hillsboro’s first “wishing tree” will showcase hundreds of wishes on the weeping elm tree at the corner of Main Street and 2nd Avenue throughout October during Hillsboro Arts Month.

Wishing trees are known worldwide as a place of refuge. The weeping elm stands at the edge of the Washington County Courthouse lawn, sheltering its patrons through all seasons. The elm effortlessly welcomes all to gather underneath it’s gentle branches, like a protective umbrella.

“It’s here where all of Hillsboro is welcome to quietly write their hopes, fears, or inspirations — and collectively share our voices as one,” said Kipperlyn Sinclair, who leads the Hillsboro Wishing Tree Initiative for a group of Downtown supporters called Hillsboro Downtown Together.

Opening ceremony at the Wishing Tree

Share your wish starting Tuesday, October 1, in conjunction with Hillsboro Arts Walk and the kick-off of Hillsboro Arts Month. Downtown supporters will gather that evening at 6 pm for an opening ceremony at the corner of Main Street & 2nd Avenue.

Colorful wishing chains made by students at Lincoln Street Elementary School and Glencoe High School will be hung on the tree, along with sparkling lights and custom cards crafted by the Hillsboro Youth Advisory Council.

“So much love and volunteer effort has gone into this initiative to bring people together around hope and community,” said Elisa Joy Payne, Executive Director of the Hillsboro Downtown Partnership. “This is the kind of activity that makes Hillsboro such a wonderful place to live, work, and do business.”

How to make your wish

Leaving a wish is easy:

  1. Visit the weeping elm tree at the corner of Main Street & 2nd Avenue
  2. Write your wish on an eco-friendly wishing tag
  3. Leave the tag at the stand under the tree for the organizers to add to the tree

You can also pick up a wishing tag at participating Downtown businesses — look for the Wishing Tree posters in their window.

Downtown supporters united

The Wishing Tree Initiative is a collaboration among the Hillsboro Downtown Partnership, the Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce, the City of Hillsboro, and Downtown businesses, property owners, and supporters. Working as a group called “Hillsboro Downtown Together”, the organizations aim to foster community in Downtown Hillsboro, enhance public and business engagement, and support economic development in the neighborhood.
