Hillsboro Police Officers ASSIST Man Experiencing Homelessness

Post Date:10/14/2019

Note: This article has been corrected to reflect that although the man is eligible for housing assistance, he is not currently on a housing waiting list.

In recent months, Crisis Intervention Officers Mike Abshier and Jason Becker made several contacts with an individual experiencing homelessness in Hillsboro. During those discussions, the officers learned the man had been critically hurt in an accident which left him with a traumatic brain injury. Believing the man might qualify for social security disability, they sought the help of an organization called, ASSIST (Assertive SSI Service Team).

The officers facilitated getting the necessary paperwork to the man. Once completed, they returned it to ASSIST. Within a week, the officers escorted a representative from ASSIST to the man's camp to conduct an in-depth interview. After learning more, ASSIST staff determined the man could be eligible for disability benefits.

The man has long struggled to obtain benefits, as there were some communication breakdowns between service providers, which presented a significant challenge to him. As of now, he remains transient. Recently, it was determined that he is eligible for housing assistance, which would be a positive step forward in his journey. ASSIST staff continue to work with the man to help him secure benefits. Officers Abshier and Becker continue to check on him.
