Working for You: Hillsboro's Gabe Bowlby, Financial Analyst

Post Date:10/30/2019

Gabe Bowlby from the Finance DepartmentYears working for Hillsboro: 2.5 years

Where have you lived?

I grew up in Hillsboro and graduated from Glencoe High School. After some college, I enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, where I worked in finance. I lived mainly in Southern California during this time, which was a fun place to live and ended up being quite an experience. At the end of the day though, Hillsboro was the only place that really felt like home, so I moved back at the end of my enlistment.

What is your most memorable former job?

Being a Marine is pretty cool. The training alone is some of my most vivid and nostalgic memories.

What led you to work for the City of Hillsboro?

After I left the Marine Corps, I really wanted to find a career that would complement my experience from the military. Because of this, I knew that I wanted to do something in finance and I really wanted to work in government.

I went back to school to get my bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. Going into my last term at Portland State University, I noticed a finance internship available at the City of Hillsboro. I figured this was the perfect opportunity to see if my experience from the Marine Corps would translate to local government.

It worked out great! I was able to learn quickly to connect some dots in my new role. I had a great mentor and I learned a lot about the City where I grew up. At the end of my internship, I was really pleased to find a permanent position with the City as a Buyer — and now I’ve been promoted to Financial Analyst.

What is the most inspiring part of your job?

I enjoy seeing firsthand how the City of Hillsboro impacts the community. I have eyes on a lot of the projects that departments within the City take on. It’s really cool to see how these evolve — and as a community member, I get to experience the benefits from my coworkers' hard work.

How does your job directly benefit Hillsboro community members?

I work in a support services position at the City of Hillsboro, so mainly I provide resources, training, and assist other community-facing departments with their budgeting.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

I plan on raising my kids in Hillsboro, so being able to have a small impact on the community that they will grow up in has been a luxury.

What do you do for fun?

I spend most of my free time with my wife and sons. We spend a lot of time at Hillsboro parks and watching Disney movies. I also read in my spare time, and I like to run and bike.

Fun facts about Gabe:

The Bowlbys settled in Washington County in 1852. A Bowlby has lived in Washington County (mainly Hillsboro) ever since.

What advice would you share with Hillsboro residents?

Hillsboro is a great place to live. Be sure to take advantage of all the fun things it has to offer, like the Saturday Farmers’ Market, Pix in the Park, summer concerts in the park, and the 4th of July Parade.

What Gabe's coworkers say about him:
