New Mobile Command Center Now Part of Hillsboro Police Fleet
See what it looks like inside the mobile command center.
The officer involved critical event, the fatal traffic crash, the murder investigation, the unexpected natural disaster or human inflicted critical incident all have the potential to place our police officers, detectives, evidence technicians, tactical negotiators, tactical response teams and agency leadership in the field for long hours and sometimes long days at a time. In an uncertain and rapidly evolving world, our front line of defense, our first responders, need the tools and space to effectively mitigate whatever is thrown their way.
The Hillsboro Police Department has been on a two-year mission to secure our mobile capabilities. The reality of modern policing is that nothing critical is handled from the confines and security of our City’s two police precincts. When our community calls, when the disaster or the critical incident strikes, we must be capable of reaching into our city; wherever we’re dispatched, whenever we’re needed, wherever we must go. Last month, we made a giant step forward in our ability to effectively provide for the public safety needs of our city.
Public Safety Emergency Mobile Command Centers (MCC) are vital pieces of equipment when effectively deployed during man-made or natural disasters. The MCC allows for our quick response and provides uninterrupted communications and investigative technology. Additionally, and of utmost importance to the Hillsboro Police Department, the MCC is also an extremely effective community outreach tool.
In November, we took possession of a custom built Freightliner MT55 Mobile Command Center. Built by LDV USA in Burlington WI, and custom designed by a team from our City, our MCC is not only a state-of-the-art mobile communication and technology giant, but also a means for our department to “live” in the community we serve. City staff from the Police Department, Finance Department, and Finance committee worked together to purchase the command center for $517,622. Despite buying the vehicle in 2019, staff secured contract pricing from 2016, saving the City $64,000.
Hillsboro is one of our nation’s technology hubs. Our MCC has the latest and best equipment available to serve our technology needs today and provide for the service demands and updates of tomorrow. Our MCC is a highly functional communication center and can provide for signal relay, on-site dispatching and immediate connection to FirstNet or Cellular on Wheels as demands develop and events dictate. We are now able to brief teams of investigators, tactical negotiators and tactical response in the field, providing for on-site preparedness and immediate deployment. Lastly, but equally important to the men and women serving our community and committed to our mission, we can provide shelter and warmth or shelter and cool as the public safety task or duty continues for hours and sometimes days in the field.
Be it a natural disaster, a man-made disaster or an opportunity to connect with the community we serve, the Hillsboro Police Department is more prepared today and always ready to respond.
