Tree Replacements and Upgrades Included in Downtown Sidewalk Repairs
Work will begin to repair six sidewalks that have been damaged by tree roots.
The sidewalks in Downtown Hillsboro provide an important space for our community to shop, dine, and gather. Street trees work together with these sidewalks to create inviting spaces by providing shade on hot summer days, beautiful fall colors, and backdrops for holiday light displays.
The City of Hillsboro partners with property owners in Downtown Hillsboro to make sure these important spaces remain in good condition and, if needed, are repaired.
This week, a Downtown sidewalk repair project will begin in select locations where sidewalks have been damaged by tree roots. To avoid countless repairs in the future, the project will include:
Building sidewalks with concrete vaults to protect the sidewalk from future tree root damage.
Replacing six trees with species from the City’s approved street tree list.
Staff will begin removing the six project area trees starting this week. Since tree care professionals do not recommend planting trees in the cold winter months, six replacement trees will be planted in the spring.
Hillsboro is recognized as a Tree City USA community for its commitment to tree care. In 2019, nearly 10,000 trees were planted at Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve. The year prior, in 2018, nearly 30,000 trees were planted.
