Jackson School Road Project Updates: February 2020
Learn more about this important transportation improvements project.
To improve active transportation options and neighborhood livability, construction will begin on the NE Jackson School Road Project in February/March 2020.
Project improvements will include complete sidewalks, cycle track, a continuous center turn lane, and underground utilities, along with improved storm drainage, and the addition of lighting and landscaped planter strips with street trees.
Below are four Jackson School Road Bicycle and Pedestrian Improvement Project progress updates to keep you in-the-know.
The construction contract was awarded to Eugene-based Pacific Excavation, Inc. at City Council on February 4, 2020. Pacific Excavation, Inc. recently worked in our community on the NW Century Boulevard Extension (Century to Jacobson), NE 28th Avenue Improvement, Veterans Drive, and the NE Lenox Street and NE Lorie Drive Culvert Replacement projects.
Community members are invited to a “Meet the Contractor” Open House on Thursday, February 27, 2020, from 5 to 7 pm, at the Brookwood Library located at 2850 NE Brookwood Pkwy. The contractor and City of Hillsboro staff will be available to answer questions about the final design, construction, and schedule. No formal presentation is planned; stop by any time during open house hours. Families are welcome and activities for kids and light refreshments will be provided.
A temporary 25 Miles per Hour (MPH) speed zone change on NE Jackson School Road - from NE Grant Street to NW Evergreen Road – will go into effect in late February/early March 2020. Temporary traffic message boards will be placed in advance of the speed reduction. The speed limit will return to 35 MPH toward the end of construction.
Roses from the Harold Eastman Memorial Rose Garden will be relocated to the Sonrise Church Community Garden this month. The City is working with NW Wetland Restoration to coordinate the temporary relocation. The roses will return home at the end of construction.
More About Planned Improvements
Currently, NE Jackson School Road is a two-lane roadway with an intermittent center turn lane, intermittent sidewalks, limited roadway lighting, and no bicycle facilities. On average, approximately 8,000 vehicles travel on NE Jackson School Road each day. This is projected to increase to approximately 10,000 vehicles per day in the next 20 years.
Improving the Jackson School Road corridor has been part of the area's Transportation System Plan for more than four decades.
The key goals of the project are to:
Improve access to and from NE Jackson School Road and adjacent residential neighborhoods for all modes of travel.
Encourage active transportation by providing enhanced bicycle and pedestrian facilities.
Construct a roadway to meet current and future demands.
The project will include constructing sidewalks, and installing street lighting over the roadways’ entire length of 1.54 miles.
