Dia do Choro: A Celebration of Brazilian Music Comes to the Walters

Post Date:02/05/2020

Choro da AlegriaThe Walters Cultural Arts Center presents Dia do Choro, a multi-group performance featuring Rio Con Brio, Duo Becar, and Choro da Alegria on Friday, March 6 at 7:30 pm. Choro is to Brazil what jazz is to the U.S.—an urban hybrid of influences from Africa, Europe, and the Western hemisphere with an emphasis on improvisation. This upbeat genre evokes in turn the carnival of Rio and the cafés of France, Spain, and Portugal. Take this opportunity to sample one of the world’s richest musical traditions brought to you by world-class Northwest bands. Tickets are $15 in advance, or $20 the day of the performance.

Choro, a Brazilian popular music genre which originated in the city of Rio de Janeiro in the 19th century, parallels North American jazz, blues, and ragtime. Though the word choro actually means “cry,” the sounds are typically upbeat and cheerful, giving one the feeling they are sipping café outside a bustling French bistro or relaxing with a refreshing água de coco (coconut water) on a sunny beach. Its complex emphasis on improvisation and variety of rhythms is enough to make the spirit brighten and want to dance and sway.

DuoBecarThe music of such legendary choro composers as Pixinguinha, Jacob do Bandolim, Ernesto Nazareth, and Antonio Carlos Jobim will take center stage on March 6 alongside the more contemporary sounds of American jazz and other Brazilian musical forms like bossa nova and samba.  This annual performance—now in its 12th year—features three bands each having their own unique sound along with special guests Gabriela Gimenes (flute) and Alexandra Santos (vocals).
