Community Support for Guests at the Safe Rest Pods
Updated February 17, 2023
Community Donations to the Safe Rest Pods
This winter, our community gave back by supporting guests at the Safe Rest Pods on SW 17th Avenue.
Lea esta información en español.
Community members provided donations of:
- Warm winter clothing: jackets, socks, gloves, hats, thermal shirts, and blankets
- Undergarments for people of all genders
- Prepared food, pastries, and nonperishable food items
Please note, the Safe Rest Pods are no longer accepting donations.
The Safe Rest Pods on SW 17th Avenue are providing more than 20 houseless community members and a few pets with shelter from cold temperatures and wrap-around support services, with more pods soon to be constructed. The temporary pods are a partnership between the City of Hillsboro, Washington County, and Open Door HousingWorks.
The City acquired the property on SW 17th Avenue to create a future Year-Round Shelter and will continue to work with the County to provide a permanent shelter program — funded by the regional Supportive Housing Services measure — that is anticipated to open in 2024.
Community Leaders Support the Safe Rest Pods
Officials and staff from the City of Hillsboro, Washington County, and OpenDoor Housing Works gathered for a tour of the Safe Rest Pods in December to celebrate the collaborative effort and show their support.
City of Hillsboro Mayor Steve Callaway, Washington County Chair Kathryn Harrington, and OpenDoor Executive Director Jeremy Toeves were among the many elected leaders in attendance.
Ahead of mid-December's dangerously cold temperatures, City of Hillsboro executive and department leaders collected and delivered winter care kits for guests at the Safe Rest Pods.
The kits included hats, gloves, handwarmers, thermals, and socks.
City Recorder Amber Ames and City Manager Robby Hammond were among many City leaders who organized and donated the winter care kits.
