The temporary Safe Rest Pods at SW 17th Avenue will move to a new, long-term home in Cornelius this summer, following Washington County's future community engagement with surrounding neighbors. Guests will be offered shelter at the new location and alternative options during the move.

The new Safe Rest Pods at 4th Avenue in Cornelius will be operated by Open Door HousingWorks with funding and support from Washington County’s Homeless Services Division. The site will offer electricity to each pod to keep guests safe during dangerously hot summer temperatures.

Since October 2022, the Safe Rest Pods at 17th Avenue met urgent community needs by:

  • Providing safe shelter and wrap-around services to 30 to 40 individuals or couples
  • Serving a total of 85 individual guests from 80 households
  • Connecting 67 guests to an individualized housing assessment, a key first step on the path from homelessness to long-term housing support

As the temporary pods are removed, the City of Hillsboro continues with plans to open a Year-Round Shelter at the 17th Avenue site and explore other options for short-term sheltering on the property.

Like the Safe Rest Pods in Hillsboro, the Cornelius location will have 24/7 onsite staff trained in safety, housing navigation, and employment support through Open Door HousingWorks.

Visit Washington County’s website to learn more about the new location.
