5 Things Ahead for 2025 in Hillsboro
1. New Fire Station: South Hillsboro Neighborhood
Construction is underway after the Hillsboro Fire & Rescue Department broke ground for a new fire station at the corner of SE Butternut Creek Parkway and SE Deline Street.
As the sixth strategically located fire station in Hillsboro, Fire Station 9 will support the area's growth and maintain reliable fire, rescue, and emergency medical care services. Completion is expected in late 2025.
2. HPD Accreditation & New Headquarters
After more than a year of preparation, HPD earned a positive review from the Northwest Accreditation Alliance and expects to receive its certificate in 2025, meeting the new state law ahead of the July 1 deadline.
The Police Department also expects design plans for its new headquarters on 25th Avenue, just south of Evergreen Road, to be approved in early 2025, with construction beginning in the spring. Completion is expected in late 2026.
3. New Children's Museum in Downtown
Downtown Hillsboro will welcome The FLIP Museum, a hands-on children’s museum for ages 0 to 10, located in the Terrace Plaza Building on 3rd Avenue. Currently a mobile museum in Washington County, FLIP will feature interactive exhibits in art, STEM, and cultural experiences designed to foster confidence, social skills, and community connections through play.
Located in the Cultural Arts District, FLIP will celebrate diverse traditions and host immersive events year-round. Renovations, volunteer recruitment, and a fundraising campaign are underway.
4. New Public Artwork: "Cloud Nest" Coming to Shute Park
Cloud Nest by artist Becky Borlan will be a 24-foothigh powder-coated steel dome with colorful, laser cut, translucent panels installed near the playground area at Hillsboro’s oldest park. The design was inspired by papel picado, Buckminster Fuller's geodesic domes, quilts, a soccer ball, and traditional plazas and town squares.
“There’s something both ancient and futuristic about this type of structure, a reflection of Hillsboro’s contrasts: hundred-year-old trees growing where cutting-edge computer chips are made,” Borlan said. *Image rendering below
5. Environmentally Conscious
Hillsboro Public Works Department's Facilities & Fleet Division is expanding its electric vehicle fleet and adding new charging stations throughout the city.
These efforts align with City sustainability goals and the Hillsboro 2035 Community Plan, aimed at reducing the City’s carbon footprint. These stations support City-owned vehicles and public access, contributing to a greener infrastructure for all.
