Murals are unique, memorable works of art shared by the community. Since the City of Hillsboro created a mural program in 2014, murals that celebrate our collective culture and heritage have popped up in parks and public spaces across the city.

boswell-thumbSome of the first murals in Hillsboro were private projects, bringing colorful, larger-than-life artworks to restaurants and shops, community spaces, streetscapes, and common areas.

In 2022, the first murals funded by the City of Hillsboro were celebrated in the Calle Diez/10th Avenue neighborhood, ushering in a new era of publicly funded murals donning walls across Hillsboro’s Cultural Arts District and beyond.

Now in 2025, the City of Hillsboro Public Art Program is updating the mural program, removing barriers to creating murals in Hillsboro, and establishing an annual public funding opportunity to support more works across the city with a focus in the Cultural Arts District.

Community members can attend an upcoming workshop and apply by 9 am on Monday, April 21 to be considered for the initial round of funding. The amount of funding awarded in 2025 and annually moving forward will depend on the number, type, and geography of the proposals received and could range from $10,000 to $30,000.

These forms, open now, include the Mural Project Application (required for all projects), Mural Idea Application (request funding or submit a suggestion), Mural Artist Roster Application (for artists that want to be considered for murals), and the Mural Wall Roster Application (for property owners who want to be considered for murals).

In addition to these resources, it’s now easier than ever for community members to bring murals to Hillsboro with the following changes to the program and approval process:

  • A new, easy to navigate online Mural Project Application

  • Removal of the requirement for a City-held easement

  • Removal of the requirement for submitting an artist design

  • A shorter approval timeline handled at the staff level

With the City’s renewed commitment to supporting murals, it’s only a matter of time before more large-scale works of art become part of Hillsboro’s community identity.
