4 Ways to Beat the Rising Cost of Broadband Internet

Post Date:04/25/2025

A recent CNET survey, found 63% of home internet customers in America faced price increases last year — paying $195 more than the year before, on average.

Author Ben Lovejoy called this trend out in his article, “Most Americans are paying more for broadband – here are four solutions,” and reported two main reasons for the rising prices:

  • Expiring promotional rates
  • Complex hidden fees

To help you fight back against the rising cost of broadband internet, Lovejoy offers four solutions:

  1. Negotiate
Most broadband service providers work to retain customers. Calling when your promotion ends and negotiating a new deal often keeps your rates lower.

  2. Downgrade
Many times the connection speed you have is greater than remote services can respond to. Check to see if your provider offers lower speed tiers at lower rates.

  3. Switch Your Internet Service Provider
If you can’t get a better deal from your provider, consider switching providers.

  4. Buy Your Own Router
Some providers charge you for a router. You may be able to save money by buying your own.

In Hillsboro, residents are seeing a different story: In the last year, HiLight customers did not see any price increases.

The City of Hillsboro remains committed to providing great broadband internet service at reasonable rates. In fact, HiLight offers symmetrical gigabit per second service for just $55 — with straightforward, no-hidden-fee pricing.

Spending $55 per month can be a steep burden for some low-income households. That’s why HiLight also offers the Bridge program. It includes gigabit service and Wi-Fi Management for just $10 per month.

This commitment to accessibility in the community has had a real impact. The Bridge program has saved low-income households more than $287,000 as of April 2025 — and saves Hillsboro households nearly $15,000 per month.

These savings reflect more than just dollars saved — they represent progress toward a more connected, equitable community. Hillsboro’s HiLight service is dedicated to helping close the digital divide and keeping broadband internet bills easy.
