Shute Park Library Mural: Meet the Artist
Artist Christian Tellez Garcia (Wesi) was selected by a community panel to create a new mural for the south-facing wall of the Shute Park Library.
Community members are invited to meet Wesi, learn more about his art making, and hear about design concepts planned for the Hillsboro site on Thursday, September 4 from 12:15 to 1:15 pm at the Shute Park Library.
A more formal design for the site is in development and will be shared for community feedback this fall.
About the Artwork
When the community was asked what it wanted to see for artwork at this site, popular themes were:
- colorful
- warm
- inviting
- celebrating activities at the library
- books
- literary themes
- the landscape in and around Hillsboro
- indigenous perspectives
- the people of Hillsboro
Wesi is being asked to incorporate these elements into his proposed design. The artwork will be displayed for a period of 3 – 5 years. Proposals may be accepted for new artwork at that time. What will be displayed on site will be a digital reproduction of an original work on vinyl.
Project Budget
With a total budget of $15,000, the artist is responsible for project-related travel, insurance, providing final design renderings, managing all aspects of developing the final artwork, and providing digital files for the reproduction process.
About the Artist
As a creator working at the intersection of architecture and mural painting, Wesi brings a unique blend of vision, technical skill, and community-centered practice to every project.
With a degree in architecture and nearly a decade of experience transforming spaces through vibrant street art and large-scale interior and exterior commissions, Wesi approaches every project with a strong understanding of spatial design and long-term visual impact. His work celebrates the connection between form and function—where architecture, storytelling, and public art converge.
He has worked on a variety of projects in the Portland Metro area including murals at the Albina Library, Portland Mercado, Plaza La Esperanza, and Advantis Community Credit Union.
About Murals in Hillsboro
Murals are unique, memorable works of art shared by the community. Hillsboro has a growing collection of murals in parks and public spaces that celebrate our collective culture and heritage.
In 2025, the City of Hillsboro Public Art Program updated the mural program, removing barriers to creating murals in Hillsboro, and establishing an annual public funding opportunity to support more works across the city with a focus in the Cultural Arts District.
