Four Hillsboro students in a new internship program are earning high school credit, a paycheck, and skills that will help them thrive in the local workforce beyond graduation.

The program, a partnership with the City of Hillsboro Workforce Development Program, Hillsboro School District, and CBRE, the global leader in commercial real estate services, is helping create the next generation of skilled employees and establish pathways to long-term employment for local youth.

  • What makes this program unique is that the interns, who were placed with CBRE this spring, have the potential to continue their paid work after graduation through the summer. The positions could lead to full-time employment at the international service provider.

  • In addition to paid work experience, CBRE is providing mentorship and professional development opportunities, ensuring the students feel empowered and supported while developing skills in property management and maintenance.

Now that the program with CBRE is off the ground, the City of Hillsboro and the Hillsboro School District hope to replicate this model approach in other industries.

“We are excited to see where this could lead,” said Claudia Rizo Mendoza, City of Hillsboro Workforce Development Manager. “It’s really opening up doors of possibility.”

In addition to the new internship program with CBRE, the City of Hillsboro and the Hillsboro School District partner closely to support other workforce development initiatives, including the Hillsboro Youth Apprenticeship Program in Advanced Manufacturing.

The City of Hillsboro helps advance additional efforts through coordination of resources — like the Future Ready Oregon Grant and ongoing cross-sector partnerships — with the goal to expand opportunities for students while responding to industry workforce needs.

Together, this work strengthens access to career-connected learning for youth and supports local employers by building a strong, sustainable talent pipeline for the future.
