Just after 1 p.m. Tuesday, an employee at a commercial office complex at 1915 NE Stucki Avenue noticed dark smoke rising quickly from a nearby building's roof. Concerned that people inside might not know about the fire, he called 911 and pulled the fire alarm to warn others. Additional 911 calls followed from others who spotted the smoke.

The first arriving crews didn't immediately see smoke and completed a 360-degree check of the building. A battalion chief found smoke and charring on the east side, and the call was upgraded to a first alarm. Hillsboro Fire & Rescue Truck 5 and Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue Truck 68 extended their aerial ladders, and firefighters found active fire on the roof and began attacking it with hose lines.

As the call was upgraded to a second alarm for additional resources, other firefighters evacuated all four floors as a precaution and used thermal imaging cameras to confirm the fire had not spread into the attic. All occupants were evacuated safely.

One firefighter suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital for evaluation. No other injuries were reported.

Fire investigators, including two bilingual in Spanish who helped gather information during interviews, responded to determine the cause. The fire remains under investigation. Hillsboro Public Safety Chaplains also responded to support building occupants, who were allowed back inside once firefighters confirmed it was safe.

Hillsboro Fire & Rescue reminds residents to know two ways out of every structure, not just at home:

• Look for exit placards and lighted exit signs to find a safe way out.
• If you exit through a closed fire door, reclose it behind you to help keep smoke and fire from spreading.
• Once outside, stay outside and meet at your designated meeting place. Call 911 from a safe distance and don't re-enter the structure.
