Hillsboro Community Center at 53rd Avenue: Design Work Begins

Post Date:02/22/2018 4:00 pm
Community Center treadmillsBuilding a centrally located community center has long been a Hillsboro City Council priority, and this week the Council reached a significant milestone in pursuit of the community’s goal of enhancing Hillsboro residents’ quality of life.

The City Council approved a $3.5 million contract with Opsis Architecture to design and engineer the Hillsboro Community Center at 53rd Avenue – the largest Parks & Recreation project in Hillsboro’s history.

Located on the west side of 53rd Avenue, across the street from 53rd Avenue Community Park, the center will bring families, friends, and neighbors together in place that is accessible, inclusive, and affordable. The City of Hillsboro already owns the 20 acres of land that will house the community center, parking lot, and connecting trails.

The two-story facility will feature meeting rooms, basketball courts, an indoor walking/jogging track, cardio weight rooms, and more.

“This center will serve everyone, with programs, activities and special events, for our youth, adults, and seniors; and for people with disabilities, and I couldn’t be more pleased,” said Gwynne Pitts, Hillsboro Parks & Recreation Commission Chair.

More than a decade after the Parks & Recreation Commission and City employees began working on plans for the community center in central Hillsboro, construction on the $35 million facility is expected to begin in 2019, and the community center is expected to open in 2021.
