Vacant Home thumbnailAn overgrown yard, garbage, and broken or boarded up windows are a sure sign of a vacant or foreclosed home.  Many of these municipal code violations are known as "attractive" nuisances, and are invitations to squatters to illegally enter and stay without permission, sometimes going undetected.  Unfortunately, who and what are inside the vacant home can often bring crime to an otherwise quiet neighborhood.

Most of the vacant homes in the City of Hillsboro are foreclosed properties that are bank owned; banks that own hundreds of thousands of properties throughout the country and have no knowledge that the one house in your neighborhood is being occupied by squatters.

One of the easiest ways to spot potential squatters on a property is by getting to know your neighbors.  Not only is it good to talk to your neighbors, it makes it easier to spot suspicious activities or persons in the area.  Other signs of someone inside a vacant home are an open door, personal items starting to appear on the property, as well as foot traffic.

Reporting code violations or squatters to the Hillsboro Code Compliance Division early is important in resolving the issue as quickly as possible.  However, keep in mind, this process is not always fast.  Often times, the removal of these occupants can take weeks or months.  Depending on how long the squatters have been on the property, the bank may have to formally evict them.

If you believe someone may be occupying a vacant home in your neighborhood, call the Hillsboro Code Compliance Division at 503-615-6645.
