July 17 Update: NE Century Boulevard has reopened between NE Cherry Drive and NE Alder Street following paving & sidewalk ramp upgrades. The work was completed four days ahead of schedule.

Original post from July 3:

Beginning next week, the City of Hillsboro Public Works Department will perform pavement maintenance and American Disabilities Act (ADA) sidewalk ramp upgrades on NE Century Boulevard.

To complete work, NE Century Boulevard — between NE Cherry Drive and NE Alder Street — will be temporarily closed to vehicle and bicycle traffic from Monday, July 9, to Friday, July 20, 2018. Pedestrian access will remain open.

This preventative maintenance project is part of the City of Hillsboro’s Pavement Management Program (PMP). The program strives to make the most effective use of resources to preserve and upgrade the overall condition of the network of more than 230.8 centerline miles of roadway maintained by the City.

Project Details

  • Local access to homes in the immediate vicinity of construction will be maintained at all times.
  • During work, the City will coordinate with emergency responders – including Police, Fire, and EMS - as well as other service providers such as the postal service and garbage haulers to limit inconvenience to the neighborhood.
  • There will be heavy equipment and trucks temporarily located at the construction site.
  • Local residents may experience some noise during work hours Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm work hours.
  • In order to replace asphalt between the two MAX rail tracks, night work is scheduled from 8 pm to 6 am on the evenings of Sunday, July 15, and again on Monday, July 16.
  • Traffic will be detoured around the worksite using East Main Street to NE Cornelius Pass Road to NE Cherry Drive or East Main Street to NE 53rd Avenue to NE Elam Young Parkway.
  • TriMet bus service 47-Main/Evergreen service will be temporary interrupted during the project. Visit TriMet's website for route details.

Each year, the City visually inspects and evaluates the condition of all arterial and collector roadways – such as Century Boulevard. The City looks for common distresses such as loss of aggregates, cracks, and distortions to help determine what is going on beneath the pavement as well as the surface of the roadway. This information is then captured in the pavement management database which prioritizes and recommends transportation improvements within the City's rights of way.

PMP projects are typically funded through a mixture of the Transportation Utility Fee (TUF), State and County gas taxes, and State and County Vehicle registration fees.

The City thanks community members for their patience as this necessary improvement project is completed. Learn more about the City’s PMP program at Hillsboro-Oregon.gov/PMP.
