Mayor Steve Callaway: My Favorite Celebrate Hillsboro Memories
by Mayor Steve Callaway
If Yogi Berra had lived in Hillsboro, he might have said, “I have too many memories from Celebrate Hillsboro’s first 13 years to remember them all.” I can relate to that.
One of my most enjoyable Celebrate Hillsboro memories is listening to Quarterflash playing to the huge crowd on the Civic Center Plaza. It was a big event for us, having so many people turn out for the opening of our new public gathering space.
Who could forget when we came together to earn our spot in the Guinness Book of World Records for the most people wearing balloon hats and, a year later, the most people wearing Groucho Marx glasses at one time — 3,400+ in 2007.
I think of how Celebrate Hillsboro has grown, and yet, it’s still about the people. It’s still a friendly, hometown gathering where you catch up with folks you haven’t seen in a while. You’ll still find City Councilors who casually chat with anyone who wants to talk.
Celebrate Hillsboro celebrates the best of our community, our people, and the connections we share.
This year, I hope we get an opportunity to say hello. And as Yogi might say, “I need to make a few more memories to replace the ones I forgot!”
