2018-19 Walters Concert Series Announced!
Opens with Special Solo Performance by Luz Elena Mendoza of Y La Bamba
The Walters Cultural Arts Center (527 E. Main St., Hillsboro) is pleased to announce its 2018-19 Concert Series line-up, with tickets for all concerts on sale Friday, August 3. The concert series opens with a performance by Luz Elena Mendoza, the celebrated frontwoman of Y La Bamba, on Friday, September 21 at 7:30 pm. Mendoza is described by Portland Mercury as “a warrior of light, resilience, and creative ingenuity” with “haunting, yet calming bluegrass folk vocals [that] are rooted in Mexican tradition.” This performance in the Walters’ 200 seat theater offers a chance for an intimate evening with a rising musician whose song-writing is a celebration of family, community, and transformation.
The eclectic season includes performers working in the genres and traditions of Americana, folk, Afro-Caribbean, classical, neosoul, opera, Celtic, Spanish flamenco, fingerstyle guitar, reggae, and many others, and features both emerging and world-renowned and Grammy Award winning musicians. Performers making their Walters’ Concert Series debut include the rising powerhouse performer Saeeda Wright, the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern influenced Seffarine, and the life-affirming performance of Painted Sky Northstar Dancers.
Returning favorites include Skybound Blue, Alasdair Fraser & Natalie Haas, Craig Carothers, and Thomas Lauderdale of Pink Martini. A Northwest favorite with international renown, Lauderdale will present two shows highlighting his talent as a classical pianist, on Friday, November 16 and Saturday, November 17. All ticket proceeds for the November 16 performance benefit the Hillsboro Arts & Culture Endowment, providing long-term funding for the growing Hillsboro arts and culture community.
