Free Community WiFi Network Launches in Downtown Hillsboro
Need to search the internet or check your email in Downtown Hillsboro? Try HiHillsboro WiFi.
The City of Hillsboro has launched the HiHillsboro WiFi network providing a free internet connection for your smartphone, tablet, or laptop in Downtown’s historic core between 6 am and 9 pm each day.
With the HiHillsboro WiFi network, community members can access the internet without a cellular data connection at these outdoor areas:
- Main Street between 1st Avenue and 6th Avenue
- Washington Street between 1st Avenue and 6th Avenue
- 2nd Avenue between Lincoln Street and Washington Street
- 3rd Avenue between Lincoln Street and Washington Street
- 4th Avenue between Lincoln Street and Washington Street
- 5th Avenue between Lincoln Street and Washington Street
The HiHillsboro WiFi network can accommodate up to 2,500 users at one time on the Civic Center Plaza, and up to 500 users in other spots in the Downtown coverage area. Like the City of Hillsboro, the name HiHillsboro is a distinctive and inviting way to welcome community members to Downtown Hillsboro and to use the free WiFi access.
“Downtown Hillsboro is the heart of our community and a key gathering place,” said City Manager Michael Brown. “As part of the Council’s priority to continue Downtown’s revitalization, the HiHillsboro WiFi network is another way that we are enhancing the Downtown experience, making it more enjoyable, more equitable, and more connected.”
Visitors to the Civic Center Plaza have been able to use free WiFi access from the City of Hillsboro since 2005. The HiHillsboro network extends WiFi network coverage to reach throughout the historic Downtown core, including the Walters Cultural Arts Center, the Hillsboro Central/SE 3rd TriMet MAX Station, and the streets that host many community events.
“HiHillsboro WiFi provides connectivity right now for our community, and it lays the foundation for future Smart City opportunities to improve our quality of life by effectively and efficiently utilizing data, technology, and innovation,” said John Taylor, Information Services Manager for the City of Hillsboro.
The HiHillsboro WiFi network will expand to provide free, outdoor WiFi access at Shute Park by summer 2019. The City also provides free wireless internet access at Hillsboro Stadium and Ron Tonkin Field in the Gordon Faber Recreation Complex.
