Hillsboro 2035 Plan Makes Significant Progress at Three-Year Mark
Dozens of local organizations and hundreds of community partners are collaborating on the Hillsboro 2035 Community Plan, helping to bring the community’s vision to life.
The Hillsboro 2035 Plan includes our community’s vision and broad goals that extend for the full life of the plan, as well as a detailed Action Plan that is updated every five years. After just three years of implementation, the current five-year Action Plan is more than 75 percent complete, with only three action items yet to be initiated.
“Thanks to our committed community partners, in a short amount of time we have made excellent progress on implementing the first five years of the Action Plan,” said Ted Vacek, Chair of the Hillsboro 2035 Oversight Committee. “We already have great momentum working toward the community’s vision for 2035.”
Many community members are working hard to spread word about the 2035 Plan and its key areas, including James Gleason, who received the 2018 Outstanding Individual Award for his tireless efforts to connect with community members in pursuit of the plan’s goals.
Gleason was recognized during the August 7 Hillsboro City Council meeting by Mayor Steve Callaway and 2035 Oversight Committee Chair Ted Vacek. Organizers Pattie Russell and Bruce Franklin of the Hillsboro Tuesday Night Market received the 2018 Outstanding Organization Award for bringing people together at numerous community events in Downtown Hillsboro, Orenco, and Tanasbourne.
During the August Council meeting, Vacek, Hillsboro Senior Project Manager Chris Hartye, and Project Specialist Dacia Bakkum provided an update on the 2035 Plan’s annual progress, including highlights from community partners such as the Hillsboro School District, the Westside Transportation Alliance, the City of Hillsboro, the Hillsboro Farmers’ Market, and numerous others.

In early 2019, the Hillsboro 2035 Oversight Committee will launch a proactive engagement campaign to collect ideas from the community for the next round of actions to be added to the 2035 Plan.
Adopted by the City Council in 2015, the Hillsboro 2035 Community Plan is the community’s shared vision for Hillsboro’s future. Ideas in the plan are based on input from more than 5,000 community members in cooperation with local organizations who agreed to share implementation responsibilities.
A volunteer, community-led task force representing a wide variety of interests helps ensure the 2035 Plan retains a diverse community perspective. The 2035 Plan is modeled after Hillsboro’s original, award-winning visioning effort, the Hillsboro 2020 Vision and Action Plan.
