City Council Conversation: Hillsboro Demonstrates National Leadership in Sustainability

By the Hillsboro City Council

Post Date:09/05/2018

If you live in Hillsboro, you live in a community that’s a national leader in sustainable practices. That’s a bold statement, but the City has backed it up with tangible actions, like reducing our energy use, setting goals, and tracking our progress. Here are five reasons why you can feel proud about Hillsboro’s leadership on sustainability.

Hillsboro residents and businesses lead the nation in voluntarily purchasing more than 1.7 billion kilowatt-hours of green power each year. Zero-emissions electricity accounts for nearly two-thirds of all power purchased in Hillsboro. And the City’s buildings and facilities will be powered entirely by green power beginning in 2019.

2. We made sustainability a Hillsboro City Council priority

The City is following through on our 2018 Council priority by converting all street lights to LED lights and implementing smart controls. In addition, the City is working with partners to expand access to electric vehicle charging stations with high voltage.

3. Sustainability is a focus area in the Hillsboro 2035 Community Plan

The Plan’s environmental sustainability objectives include reducing energy needs, increasing renewable energy use, and reducing and reusing waste. The 21-member Sustainability Task Force helped develop the Hillsboro Environmental Sustainability Plan, and now oversees the Plan's implementation.

The City has reduced energy use by 26 percent since 2009 — the greatest improvement in the nation among all public agencies — despite adding 300,000 square feet of new buildings and facilities. The City also has reduced water use by 11 percent since 2012.

 5. We're not complacent or satisfied with our results

Guided by Hillsboro’s Sustainability Manager, the City closely tracks Hillsboro's progress to continue reducing our environmental footprint. With tools such as the Environmental Sustainability Report and the Greenhouse Gas Inventory reports, the City measures and compares our annual progress with our long-term goals.
