Saeeda Wright: A Journey to Love
Raised in a family of musicians and worship leaders, music was ingrained in this soulful performer at an early age. Saeeda Wright’s passionate performances and magnetic voice draws in those who hear the stories she tells through song. Wright has toured with the legendary pop star Prince and gone on to play with many other acclaimed musicians—including Liz Warfield and the Oregon Symphony—and command stages like Portland’s Annual Blues Festival. Cultural Arts staff spoke with Wright about where she finds the motivation to perform songs that promote messages of love, inspiration and encouragement.
How did you get started in music?
My mother had a beautiful voice in her youth and she loved playing music around the house, so I was surrounded by it. Throughout my schooling I was usually in a choir and eventually decided to take music seriously as a career in high school. I started doing competitions and studio work with my friends and the rest is history.
What do you love most about singing and performing?
I love the ability to convey a message and tell stories with songs. Touching the heart of my listener is my favorite thing to do...It really is the best job in the world.
Where do you find your inspiration as an artist?
I find inspiration in prayer and observation of my own life. I am always praying that God grant me wisdom and show me the lesson in the things I go through. That usually leads me to think a lot about my life experiences. I tend to analyze, extract the lessons, and then I sing about them.
How did you begin touring with Prince as a member of the New Power Generation? How did that experience influence you as a performer?
I was singing background for Prince’s artist Liv Warfield and he loved our collective sound so when he was launching his Hit and Run 2015 Tour, he asked if I wanted to sing with him, alongside Liv, and I said yes. I learned a lot about how to move about in the industry and also how to maintain solid relationships. We do our best to stick together as family and support one another as Prince commissioned us to do. As a performer, I watched him love on his fans and continuously offer his gift in many ways and I hope to do the same.
