When the 13 members of this year’s Hillsboro Civic Leadership Academy address the City Council this month, many community leaders will be listening intently.
The Academy’s Class of 2018 will present its research and recommendations to foster a stronger sense of community throughout the city, and to create connections among neighbors as Hillsboro continues to grow.
From the east side (Tanasbourne, AmberGlen, and Orenco Station) to the west side (Jackson School, Downtown Hillsboro, and Shute Park) to the south side (Witch Hazel Village, Minter Bridge, and South Hillsboro), we all benefit from shared experiences and connections.
The Academy itself is a collaboration of people who hail from diverse backgrounds and neighborhoods, and who contribute unique perspectives and work together for the betterment of our community. Strangers become trusted colleagues and friends after six weeks of learning about governance, exploring the elements of community leadership, and reaching consensus on how to move forward.
Launched in 2016 with the support of the City Council — yet another group of volunteers brought together by a shared love of Hillsboro and a desire to serve — the Academy welcomes Hillsboro residents who are new to local government.
The Academy is an ideal place for community-minded neighbors to engage, offer input, and prepare to serve in a range of civic leadership capacities. Since 2016, 10 Academy graduates have gone on to serve on City boards and commissions.
Previous Academy classes have provided their recommendations to address housing needs and to increase support for local entrepreneurs.
Now, in 2018, the Civic Leadership Academy members will speak to the City Council about increasing our connections, bringing more neighbors together, and continuing to preserve the small-town togetherness that helps make Hillsboro special.
