Hillsboro Pursues “Tree City USA” Status
More than 3,400 American communities have made the commitment to becoming a Tree City USA – including the City of Hillsboro.
A national recognition program, Tree City USA began in 1976 and is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and National Association of State Foresters. To qualify as a Tree City USA community, the City will meet four fundamental standards of sound urban forestry management, including:
- Maintaining a tree board or department
- Having a community tree ordinance
- Spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry
- Celebrating Arbor Day
The City of Hillsboro was approved to complete the requirements and apply for Tree City USA status by the Hillsboro City Council on November 6, 2018.
Achieving Tree City USA status was made a 2018 Council priority after being listed as a specific action item in Hillsboro’s 2020 Plan in 2000. The City of Hillsboro and community partners made the commitment to a healthier environment and sustainable urban forestry program.
Cleaner air, improved storm water management, energy savings, and increased property values and commercial activity are among the benefits enjoyed by Tree City USA communities.
