Spoofed Calls - A Trick Scammers Use to Fool You
Check out these tips to avoid being scammed by caller identification spoofed calls that appear to be from a legitimate entity.
Recently, a number of Hillsboro residents have reported receiving phone calls from phone numbers associated with the City of Hillsboro that advertise credit card refinancing or ask for personal information. The phone numbers on these calls have been spoofed and the City has no role in the calls.
Hillsboro Police is aware of this issue through numerous reports, but federal laws that govern such calls are not enough to stop them.
- The City of Hillsboro will NOT call and ask for your credit card information.
- DO NOT provide your personal information, including credit card account numbers to anyone calling you, emailing you or requesting it at your door.
- Only do business with those entities you have initiated contact with and can verify are legitimate.
If you do become a victim of a scam...
- Report it to police, as well as any financial institutions you do business with.
- Also, review your credit card statements, and keep an eye on your credit report for unusual and unexplained activity. You are entitled to receive one free copy of your credit report every 12 months from each of the three national credit bureaus. To get the most out of it and track your information more regularly, make a request to one of the agencies every four months. AnnualCreditReport.com is the only authorized website for free credit reports, or you can call 1-877-322-8228. You will need to provide your name, address, social security number and date of birth to verify your identity.
- You may also want to consider placing a freeze on your credit report. It's free. To do so, you will need to contact each credit bureau individually.
