K9 Rocket Launches His Police Career

Take a look as Officer Scott Brennan introduces us to his new partner.

Post Date:01/03/2019 7:45 am

RocketThe newest member of the Hillsboro Police K9 Team is Rocket.  He's a friendly, playful 70-pound, 20-month old German Shepherd from the Netherlands.

In July 2018, our department was looking for a new K9 to add to our program.  So, they sent Officers Denise Lemen and Mike Lee to Vohne Liche Kennels in California in search of the right one.  They tested several dogs in the selection process and came home with Rocket - who at the time was named, Nico.

Officer Brennan says, "I had the opportunity to re-name Nico and I changed his name to Rocket.  My family is very much a Disney family and we enjoy all Disney has to offer. One of our favorite movies is Guardians of the Galaxy and the character Rocket is my favorite."

Rocket and Officer Brennan officially teamed up on July 13.  "We spent a couple months bonding with one another in preparation for training.  In October, we began a 10-week K9 training school taught by Officer Lemen.  It was during that time that Rocket and I really learned to work together as a team."

Rocket is a tracking dog which tracks/detects human odor.  He's used to not only track people, but also to locate articles of evidence.

During their training, Officer Brennan worked with Rocket on positive-reinforced obedience, tracking, obstacle courses, building searches, apprehension and area searches.  They recently completed their 400-hour training and certified through the Oregon Police Canine Association, and in Officer Brennan's words, "We are ready to work!"  In fact, Rocket has already got one capture under his collar - assisting Forest Grove Police in locating a man with a warrant.  Rocket also recently located a person who was in immediate need.

Rocket is one of four tracking K9s for the Hillsboro Police Department K9 Unit.  The department also has two drug detection K9s.
