Hillsboro Fire & Rescue Department: “It’s About Saving Lives”
For Fire Prevention Specialist Bruce Montgomery, adding “Rescue” into the Hillsboro Fire Department’s official name — now the Hillsboro Fire & Rescue Department — just makes sense.
He remembers the moment in July 2011 when firefighters discovered a John Deere bulldozer had gone off a 15-foot embankment behind a Hillsboro home, leaving the 81-year-old driver pinned by the machine’s controller levers.
“Watching the expertise of the engine crews and technical rescue team as they freed the injured bulldozer driver was impressive,” Montgomery said. “I will never forget seeing the relief on the faces of the man’s wife and family as he was rescued by the crew and taken to the waiting ambulance.”
For many Hillsboro residents, hearing “Fire Department“ alone left out countless stories of those who, like the rescued bulldozer driver, didn’t experience a fire, but still needed the professional help of trained first responders.
“It’s about saving lives,” said Fire Chief David Downey. “For decades, we’ve been known as both Hillsboro Fire & Rescue and the Hillsboro Fire Department. We want everyone to know us as the Hillsboro Fire & Rescue Department, or Hillsboro Fire & Rescue, when they’re in need of help.”
Hillsboro Fire & Rescue Department communicates the services provided by firefighters, trained paramedics, and other Fire & Rescue employees who respond to medical emergency calls, vehicle crashes, and other life safety situations that do not involve a fire. In addition, Fire & Rescue staff prepare in advance for emergency management situations, such as a major earthquake, flooding, and other disasters.
“We will always be there to fight fires, but we also want Hillsboro residents to know to call us when they’re in need of medical help or safety assistance,” Downey said.
