Partnership Helps Cocinemos Graduates Launch Food Businesses

Post Date:07/08/2019

Cocinemos participant making foodFood connects people within healthy, vibrant communities. The Cocinemos ("cooking together," or "let's cook") program trains aspiring food entrepreneurs from our community to start or grow food-based businesses.

Through a partnership with the Hillsboro Community Senior Center, the City of Hillsboro Economic Development Department, and Adelante Mujeres, three Cocinemos graduates have the chance to launch their businesses. They'll use the Senior Center's commercial kitchen space to prepare food, and receive coaching and development that will help them succeed.

  • Juan Carlos Lopez runs Los Lobos Street Food, which specializes in quesadillas, pambazos, and tortas — with bread made in house. He sells at local farmers' markets and through his catering service.
  • Veronica Guerrero serves Mexican food, with tamales as the specialty. Her business, Zamora Food Service, is a vendor at the Hillsboro Farmers' Markets and offers catering.
  • Blanca's catering business, Rosita's Bakery, offers sweet empanadas, a traditional Mexican dessert. She plans to begin selling at farmers' markets this year.

Businesses in Hillsboro's Enterprise Zone fund Cocinemos and other City of Hillsboro workforce training and economic development programs by paying a Community Service Fee.
