Rain, Rain, Go Away... Into the Stormwater System
Hillsboro's 100-year-old Stormwater System remains vital
What is “stormwater”?
If you said it’s rain and snowmelt, you’re right.
After 100 years of service to the Hillsboro community, the City’s century-old Stormwater System continues to collect, move, and treat rain and snowmelt before releasing it into local waterways. But the system is showing its age.
When a Stormwater System works for more than 100 years, parts continually need to be repaired and replaced. Right now, the system’s backlog of needed infrastructure repairs and replacements is more than $130 million — and that’s in addition to the millions of dollars invested in eight major projects since 2015.
That’s why the City is considering several options for increasing the Surface Water Management Local Service Fee (LSF), which is currently set at $1 per month for most single-family residential customers. LSF revenue is dedicated to funding only the repair and replacement of aging stormwater infrastructure.
