Hillsboro Steps Forward with Sidewalk Inventory
Hundreds of miles of sidewalk exist along roadways in the City of Hillsboro. Whether its work, errands, or a favorite Hillsboro destination, these sidewalks provide community members a space – separated from vehicle traffic – to walk to where they need or want to go.
Sidewalk maintenance is important so that when damage or deterioration happen, the sidewalk is fixed before the issue becomes a tripping hazard.
Although sidewalk maintenance is the responsibility of the adjacent property owner per Hillsboro Municipal Code Section 9.16.010, the City of Hillsboro is kicking off a new project to develop a clear picture of the condition of all sidewalks along City-maintained roadways in summer 2019.
The City of Hillsboro Public Works Department has hired a contractor to:
- Scan all sidewalks along streets that are maintained by the City of Hillsboro to identify locations with distresses (cracks, uplifting, etc.)
- Develop a sidewalk condition rating based on the information gathered during the scanning process
The City will use the project findings to verify and update the sidewalk inventory map.
Community members may see individuals pushing mobile scanning carts along sidewalks to the collect the information needed to inform the sidewalk condition ratings.
