Wine with Friends was painted on location - en plein air - at Árdíri Winery and Vineyards in Hillsboro. The event was the Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council’s annual plein air event, where artists paint Hillsboro scenes for fun and awards, followed by an exhibit at the Walters Cultural Arts Center. It was a sunny September afternoon and the leaves were beginning to turn.
Following is the description that I wrote when I painted it: “What better way to spend a warm fall afternoon, than sipping wine with friends in the vineyard? Did the winery know that a red umbrella complemented the green vines perfectly, calling to artists to paint the scene?”
Sandra Pearce has loved art all her life. “I was born in England, and as a child, immigrated to America with my family. While crossing the Atlantic on the RMS Queen Mary, I took first place in the children’s drawing competition. Each Christmas, I received ever larger watercolor pan paint tins with beautiful paintings on the lids.”
Moving to Portland, she contributed illustrations to Northwest magazines and spent one year working at Michael Curry Design, painting on animatronic puppets (both large and small), costumes and stage backdrops.
“More and more, I paint ‘en plein air.’ I have painted in pelting rain and high wind, numbing cold and blazing sun. These situations create vivid memories and some of the best paintings.
“Living and painting in the Oregon Coast Range, I enjoy peace and tranquility with my animals in our woodland home and garden. There, the simple life nurtures my creative spirit, and I'm able to delve into painting any or all of the time. These days, painting comes first.”
