Volunteer OpportunitiesKids in field experience program looking through binocularsJackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve is your go to location for nature-based camps, classes and programs in Hillsboro! Whether you are a parent looking or a summer camp for your child, a school teacher planning a field trip or an adult who wants to learn more about bird watching, we have something for everyone!

  • Camps
Check out our  summer camp information for kids ages 4 - 18.
  • Lunch with the Birds
Join Jackson Bottom staff and volunteers every Wednesday, January through June, from noon to 1 pm. Learn local wildlife identification tips and natural history facts.

  • Osprey Watch
Come and view Hillsboro's very own osprey family! A pair of osprey have nested at Jackson Bottom every summer since 2013. This year their eggs hatched in late May and the chicks are doing well. They keep getting bigger and bigger as their mom and dad feed them every day.

Come to Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve and take a 10 minute walk to the viewing area next to Bobcat Marsh. Osprey Watch volunteers are on hand with spotting scopes and binoculars to help you view activity at the nest and share information with you. See an osprey skull and an osprey egg. View photos from previous nesting seasons. Hear the surprising story of osprey versus goose that transpired in March. The best viewing will involve a walk of approximately 1/2 mile, round-trip, on level trails.

    When: Weekends June 15 - August 4, 10:30 am - 1:30 pm

To Confirm Dates:  Call 503-681-6206 or inquire at the Nature Center front desk when you arrive.

  • Plant Walks
Hillsboro’s’ fantastic parks feature an array of native plants, from low growing sword fern to mighty oaks. These plants provide us with beauty, shade, food, water, and oxygen. Join our evening plant walks at various parks this summer in order to learn more about them. In our one hour walk you can meet a number of plant species and learn how to recognize them. Then continue your walk if you wish to, because now you have some friends in the forest! Free. No pre-registration required. Children must be accompanied by an adult. All ages.

  • Service Projects
Support Hillsboro Parks & Recreation by volunteering for a habitat enhancement or park beautification project.
  • Sunset Sit & Moonrise Smile
Once a month make time in your day to relax and take in the eastern sky as the sun sets and the moon rises. Join us thirty minutes before sunset at select City of Hillsboro park sites. A Parks & Recreation naturalist will be on hand to help you tune in to the many wonderful events that happen as day passes into night.
  • Wetlands Individual Leadership Development (WILD Program)
Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve offers volunteer counselor opportunities for their WILD Program (Wetlands Individual Leadership Development). This is a great volunteer opportunity for students who love the outdoors and enjoy working with children.
