Bringing Leadership, Arts & Sports Together

Hillsboro Parks & Recreation and the Hillsboro School District have joined together to offer a valuable after school program for students in grades 1 - 6.

This program provides a safe, fun place for your child to play sports, learn new skills, get help with their homework and make a difference in their community five days a week after school. BLAST combines teamwork, recreation, arts and crafts, community service projects, life skills training, and academic support all in one comprehensive program.

Enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis and space is limited. Registration forms are available at school or the Parks & Recreation administration office. There is no on-line registration for this program.

1st - 6th grades

Dates: October 1, 2018 - May 31, 2019

Program will meet on regular, full school days only. It will not meet when school is closed due to an emergency or inclement weather or non-school days.


Monday - Friday


Immediately after school until 5 pm. Please note: On Wednesday school is released 1/2 hour earlier.


$152 per month


All students report to the gym after school.

Transportation: The bus will depart from the school at 5 pm, Monday - Friday to drop your child off at the bus stop you indicate on the Afterschool Transportation Permission Slip. The Afterschool Transportation Permission Slip is available in the main office at your school. Please complete the form and return to the office manager at your school.

If your child is riding the activity bus home, please allow up to one week to process this request upon registration. Hillsboro Parks & Recreation will notify you when they are on the bus roster.

If you pick up your child, please arrive promptly at 5 pm. Additional fees will be charged if you are late.

Program Schedule:

On Monday - Friday, following check-in and snacks, participants will have program time which may include sports, art activities, enrichment classes, life skills lessons, and more. BLAST staff will also provide 30 minutes of homework support Monday through Thursday.

Program Activities: Homework
Participants have a designated, quiet time to work on homework for at least 30 minutes Monday through Thursday with assistance from the staff. However, not all homework may get done in this time. Participants are expected to have their homework or a book to read (if no homework) at program every day.

Life Skills
Participants will have discussions and do activities covering topics such as: self-image and self-improvement, decision making, communication skills, coping with anxiety and anger, social skills such as effective communication with others, confidence, and resolving conflicts.

Team Building
Participants will work together in groups to further develop social skills and to get to know the other participants better.

Participants will learn the rules, strategies, and fundamental skills of different sports including team sports, lifetime sports, and individual sports. The focus will be on sportsmanship and teamwork. They will also learn about other recreational opportunities in the community, nutrition, and wellness.

Arts & Crafts
Projects will focus on the season and/or monthly theme and may be driven by service projects throughout the year.

Activity & Reading Program (in cooperation with the Hillsboro Public Library).

Throughout the school year, Library staff brings books and interactive activities out to the sites that correspond with BLAST monthly themes.
