Spotlight on Environmental Leaders
Meet four women who have lead and advocated for environmental causes that have advanced sustainability and made a difference across North America and the world.
Profiles of these notable activists, ecologists, trailblazers, park rangers, and educators will be on display at the Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve Nature Center throughout the month of March. You can also read them below.
Women's Sports Shape Hillsboro
The community is buzzing with excitement as the Portland Thorns FC soccer team and the Portland Fire WNBA basketball team prepare to make Hillsboro their new training home with the world’s first dual-sport performance center exclusively for professional women's teams.
“I grew up playing soccer. When I was looking at where I could play in college, I was told, ‘Don’t worry about it, because no one will ever pay to see women play sports,’” said Hillsboro Mayor Beach Pace.
“But now, when I go to Thorns games and see the stands full, and when I come to an event like this. I get very emotional, because I was told opportunities like this wouldn’t exist. I was told it would never happen. And now it is.”
Plus, professional women's softball is coming to Hillsboro with the Portland Cascade playing games at Hillsboro Ballpark. The team's home opener is scheduled for Thursday, June 18.
“This is a home run for Hillsboro and women’s sports in the Portland metro area,” said Hillsboro Mayor Beach Pace.
“We are very excited for the Hillsboro Ballpark to be the home of the Portland Cascade. Welcome to Hillsboro!”
