About the Park

The 44-acre nature park is co-owned with Metro Regional Government and features a scenic blend of rolling landscape, open meadows, oak savannah, riparian habitat and forested areas for a variety of birds and wildlife. Over a century ago, Orenco Woods was part of the Oregon Nursery Company (ORE-gon, N-nursery, CO-company), the largest nursery on the west coast and best known for Orenco apples. Today, Orenco Woods Nature Park preserves one of the largest remaining open spaces along the Rock Creek Greenway corridor. A segment of the Rock Creek Regional Trail runs through the park over a majestic bridge. A network of looped trails and bridges weave their way through the site providing visitors with a variety of experiences like seasonal and temporary sculptures and the historic McDonald house from 1910.

Orenco Woods offers a nature themed playground, two picnic shelters, sculptures, and the in the winter when it snows kids enjoy the sledding hills.

No dogs or bikes allowed on habitat / nature trails.

Construction Updates

The northeast corner of Orenco Woods Nature Park was closed in 2024 for construction as part of the Willamette Water Supply System project. In addition to installation of underground water pipeline, the project also included trail improvements throughout the park.

The final stage of the project includes replanting construction areas which will begin in October 2024. Replanted areas will be closely monitored for five years. There will be no disruption to park use during planting.

Nature Park Wildlife Protection and Adaptive Management Plan

To protect wildlife during pipeline construction through the Park, a Wildlife Protection and Adaptive Management Plan was developed.

McDonald House

The historic McDonald House is located within Orenco Woods Nature Park. Malcolm McDonald, co-founder of the Oregon Nursery Company, built his house on the property in 1910. The jewel of Orenco, the company town that supported the nursery, the house has long been used as a community gathering place. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. There is no timeline set for restoration.
