Welcome to the 10th Annual Fitness Challenge presented by the City of Hillsboro. 

The 2019 Fitness Challenge will consist of two, six-week programs, called Waves. In the past, we found that most participants tend to drop out of the program around week six. By splitting the challenge into two Waves, we'll help you keep your eye on the prize six weeks at a time.

Dates

The 2019 Fitness Challenge will run January 12 - April 6, 2019.

Wave 1: January 12–February 23, 2019

Wave 2: February 23–April 6, 2019

Registration and Cost to Participate

The cost to participate in each six-week Wave of the Fitness Challenge is $40 for members of Shute Park Aquatic & Recreation Center, or $50 for non-members. Receive a $10 discount on Wave 2 when you register for both Waves.

Please stop by SHARC to pick up your registration packet.

The participation fee for each Wave includes: 

  • Two Body Composition and Fitness Assessments, one at the beginning and one at the end of each six-week Wave
  • One 10-punch card for fitness classes 
  • Three Health and/or Fitness Workshops
  • One Group Personal Training Session or one Small Group Class
  • 10% off coupon for additional Personal Training Session(s)
  • One Mini-Challenge
  • Optional Nutrition Counseling: $25 for a 30 minute consultation
  • Support and motivation through our Hillsboro Fitness Challenge Facebook Group
Body Composition and Fitness Assessments

Three Fitness Challenge participants smile as they complete a planking activityYou will receive Body Composition and Fitness Assessments, one at the beginning, and one at the end of each Wave. These assessments take place during the Kickoff and Finish Line Events. 

The assessments will be completed utilizing the following stations:

  • Pushups, Plank, and Squats
  • Sit and Reach, Shoulder Flexibility, Grip Strength
  • VO2 Max Testing, also known as maximum oxygen uptake testing, to measure cardiovascular fitness
  • Body Composition, Measurements, and Weigh-in
  • Goal Setting
  • Workout Structure, Body Composition Recap, Target Heart Rate

10 Fitness Classes

As a Fitness Challenge participant, you will receive a 10-punch card to participate in any of SHARC's fitness classes. These 10 classes are included in your registration. If you wish to participate in more classes or use the SHARC facility for other purposes, you must purchase a single visit fee or a SHARC membership. Please present your punch card and picture ID to the front desk upon entering SHARC. 

Fitness Challenge Exercise Classes

Join other challenge participants to get the motivation and support you need to reach your fitness goals. The classes below are designed for our Fitness Challenge participants, and available through your 10-punch card. 

Dry Land Exercise

Strength and Core Conditioning
Mondays, 5:30–6:30 pm

Indoor Cycling
Tuesdays, 5:30–6:15 pm

Fitness Challenge Class
Wednesdays, 8:10–8:50 am (available January 16–April 3)

Water Exercise

Cardio Blast
Thursdays, 6:05–6:55 pm

Total Body Conditioning
Fridays, 6:25–7:35 am

These classes are geared for all levels of fitness, and also open to SHARC members and drop-in visitors.

Personal Training/Small Group Class

One Group Personal Training Session or one Small Group Class is included in the Fitness Challenge participation fee.

We encourage group workouts as an opportunity for challenge participants to meet one another and create a support network to lean on during the challenge and beyond. Signups for these sessions will be available during registration and at the kickoff event. 

Group Personal Training Session

A full body workout in the weight room, cardio room, or in the pool.

10% Off Personal Training Coupon

Upon registration, you will receive a coupon for 10% off additional personal training. The coupon can be used for one session, a discount on multiple sessions, or for buddy sessions, but it is only good once. Once you have used your 10% off coupon, your trainer will give you another coupon for 15% off additional sessions. 

Cancellations

If you are unable to make your personal training sessions, please call SHARC at 503-681-6127 at least 24 hours in advance to let us know. 

Optional Nutrition Counseling

SHARC's Nutrition Counselor is ready to work with you! Schedule a nutrition consultation to discuss proper eating habits, recommended daily caloric intake based on your body type and activity level, meal choices and planning, changes needed for your daily diet, and setting realistic goals to achieve your wellness needs.  

The cost is $25 for a 30 minute consultation. If more time is needed or used, additional fees will be assessed.

Wave 1: Creating Healthy Habits

January 12–February 23, 2019

Wave 1 is about creating healthy and positive habits! 

We will cover: 

  • Effective goal setting
  • Proper nutrition and healthy eating to meet wellness goals
  • Creating a positive routine
Wave 1 Kickoff Event

Kickoff the challenge with your initial Body Composition and Fitness Assessment. Please remember that these fitness assessments are a tool to measure your hard work during the next six weeks — no need to be nervous or fret. We all have to start somewhere — why not start with a great support group?

Wave 1 Mini Challenge: Healthy Habit Journal

January 25—February 10

For 16 days, we will work on breaking bad habits by adding healthy ones. Successful habit-breakers will be entered to win a free registration to our new MELT class or two concert tickets. 

You will receive a Habit Breaking Journal with your Fitness Challenge Welcome Packet. We will ask you to identify four habits to break, and indicate what days you are successful. in your journal. Return your journal by February 13 to be eligible to win prizes. 

Wave 1 Finish Line

Saturday, February 23
10 am–1:15 pm

At the end of the six-week program, we will gather to measure our progress through Body Composition and Fitness Assessments. We will divide into groups one more time to re-test and re-visit all of the stations.

For those participating in Wave 2, this will serve as a halfway progress update. Please dress for exercise and bring a water bottle. Because we will be testing body composition, please do not eat for 2 hours prior to the event, and do not exercise for four hours prior.

Wave 2: Fitness Improvements

February 23–April 6, 2019

Wave 2 will focus on body composition. We will include the healthy habits we developed during the first six weeks and begin to take fitness to the next level. You will improve your cardiovascular endurance, blast through plateaus, and increase your muscle strength and flexibility, resulting in positive outcomes for your body composition.

This will serve as the halfway progress point for those participating in both Waves, and the Fitness Challenge Kickoff for new participants joining us for Wave 2. At the event, you will complete a Body Composition and Fitness Assessment.

Wave 2 Mini Challenge: Track your Exercise

March 2–March 23, 2019

Your challenge is to log 500 minutes of cardio exercise and 16 days of stretching in 22 days! 

Log books will be sent via email or available for pick-up on March 2. 

At the end of the challenge, turn in your log book by emailing it to us or dropping off your sheets.

Wave 2 Finish Line
