What is Pavement Overlay?
A pavement overlay is preventive maintenance that significantly lengthens the life of our roads. When temperatures fluctuate, pavement expands and contracts creating cracks. When water seeps into the cracks, it degrades the asphalt and pavement, compromising structural integrity.
Why would you choose to do an Overlay?
Overlays prolong the life of the roadway. On average they are done at the mid stage of a roadway’s life cycle. They build on the time and money that we have already invested in roadway maintenance and can extend the functional life of the pavement surface by 15 years or more.
What Happens to Roadways During an Overlay?
Asphalt overlay is a method in which an existing asphalt surface is paved over with a new asphalt cross section. It consists of installing a new layer of asphalt on top of the existing street surface at a thickness of one to three inches. Streets are ground down (milled) before resurfacing so asphalt will not build up at the edge of the gutter.
Do Overlays fix issues with the roadway?
Overlay or resurface treated roads might undergo repairs to fix cracks and potholes. These repairs are performed before the overlay or resurface and won't be visible after. Oftentimes overlays incorporate fabric interlayers to help act as a moisture barrier and reduce reflective cracking from the original surface into the new overlay.
Included with repaving of the roadways, ADA improvements are also constructed.
These projects may cause up to 20-minute traffic delays. Posts to social media are scheduled for major arterials and collectors before work begins. Follow the City of Hillsboro on Twitter or like us on Facebook to receive timely information about these major roadway repair projects.
