Volunteer Opportunities that Shape Your Community’s Future

Have you ever thought about using your unique skills and talents to serve your community and make Hillsboro a better place? Perhaps you’re interested in personal and professional growth or want additional networking opportunities. Or maybe you just love Hillsboro and want to engage in your community to enhance your civic pride. Volunteering on one of the City of Hillsboro’s boards and commissions can help you do all these things and more.

Hillsboro is seeking volunteers who can make a commitment to bettering our community and is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion within its boards, commissions, and committees. We recognize we must be inclusive in developing and implementing policies to ensure that City services are responsive to race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, ability, religion, and other individual identities. These equal opportunity positions are intended for diverse and talented volunteers who reflect and enhance the community we serve. Please consider joining the group of dedicated volunteers who help our City run smoothly.

Each board and commission is unique and may have its own set of requirements.

We currently have two vacancies on the Library Board and one vacancy on the Finance Committee.

The Library Board positions require applicants to be residents of unincorporated, Washington County. To check your eligibility, visit Hillsboro Maps, enter your address and it will indicate whether you are inside city limits. If easier, call the Planning Department at 503-681-6153 and they are happy to look your address up for you.

Applications, can be completed electronically or submitted by hand, email, fax or mail to the City Recorder’s office (contact information found on the application). Applications for the 2021 recruitment process will be accepted this Fall. Board and commission members may serve up to three terms at the discretion of the City Council, with exception to the Utilities Commission. Members that desire to be reappointed for a second or third term will still be required to go through a formal application process. Members would be eligible to reapply after a two year break but could be considered for a separate board or commission after the third term.

Appointments are at the discretion of the Mayor and Council President, with the approval of the City Council, and are made generally at the first Council meeting of the year. You do not need to attend the City Council meeting to be appointed.
